Safety is very important to everyone at VINZ, whether it’s at work or home. Shalmendra say’s “when it comes to safety, we don’t want anyone to get injured or risk others as this leaves bad memories for a lifetime” #MakingDrivingSafer

Meet Shalmendra Dev, one of our technical specialists at VINZ. Shalmendra is a qualified mechanic and has a wealth of technical knowledge and experience with all types of safety inspections. Shalmendra currently works within our Technical advisory team at is based at VINZ National Support Office.

Originally, from a village named Labasa in the Fiji Islands, which is also known as the “Friendly North”. Shalmendra trained at the Fiji Institute of Technology (FIT), where he completed a Trade Certificate in Light Motor Vehicle Technology, and soon after started an apprenticeship in 1996 and graduated in 1999 with his Trade Certificate.

Shalmendra immigrated to New Zealand in 2001 and worked as a mechanic for a private garage for three years before joining the Inspection industry as Vehicle Inspector. During his successive years in the Industry he has gained a thorough understanding leading to being appointed as Senior Vehicle Inspector, before being promoted into his current role in the VINZ technical department.

Happily married with two young boys “keeps me busy” says Shalmendra, however, it also “keeps me motivated to gain more knowledge with the rules and regulations of vehicle safety inspections”

“Every day is a different day, where we learn something new, which I like the most and that’s how I enjoy my work” says Shalmendra.

Shalmendra enjoys “working at VINZ, as it’s like a family working environment, where we help and support each other. The company really looks after their staff and is always there in need of any kind of help”
