Most privately-owned vehicles, 3,500kg and under, need a regular WoF. This includes cars, utes, trailers, motorbikes, and small trucks.
Passenger service vehicles, rental vehicles and heavy goods vehicles, all need a Certificate of Fitness (CoF) rather than a WoF.
At VINZ there is no need to book – just turn up during opening hours, when it’s convenient for you. *excluding our Christchurch City and Lower Hutt sites.
If your vehicle fails a WoF, you have up to 28 days to have it re-inspected free-of-charge. Within in this period, your vehicle may only be driven to a place of repair or inspection.
Do you need help with car repairs?
If you’re on a benefit or a low income, you may be able to get help with car repairs through Work and Income New Zealand – if it’s essential for work, a health condition, disability or because of no public transport. It’ll depend on your situation and you’ll need to pay the money back. You can’t use it to pay for a WoF or registration.
